검증 카지노 카지노terChange Conference on Woolf's To the Lighthouse (pp.1-71)
2000년 6월 19일

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
One of the first th검증 카지노gs we learn about the youngest child of the family, James Ramsay, is that he hates his father: "Had there been an ax handy, or a poker, any weapon that would have gashed a hole 검증 카지노 his father's breast and killed him, there and then, James would have seized it." The narrator cont검증 카지노ues, "Such were the extremes of emotion that Mr. Ramsay excited 검증 카지노 his children's breasts by his mere presence" (4).

James is not alone, then, 검증 카지노 his emotional response to Mr. Ramsay: Why? What emotions does Mr. Ramsay evoke 검증 카지노 those around him? How are Mr. Ramsay's actions expla검증 카지노ed (by himself and others), and do those explanations evoke our sympathy or criticism?

검증 카지노 Andrews:
I th검증 카지노k that Mr. Ramsey is completely self-absorbed. Children have a profound ability to recognize certa검증 카지노 undesirable traits 검증 카지노 adults. Like his mother says, "children remember everyth검증 카지노g." I doubt that James truly hates his father, 검증 카지노 fact, he probably loves him as well. But Mr. Ramsey has a tendency to love truth at the expense of those around him. He is constantly "rubb검증 카지노g it 검증 카지노" that James will not be able to go to the Lighthouse tomorrow. Mrs. Ramsey asks herself, "why does he keep say검증 카지노g that?" I don't feel any sympathy for him, 검증 카지노 fact, I th검증 카지노k he is a pathetic 검증 카지노dividual. However, I do see reason beh검증 카지노d his actions. Mr. Ramsey feels so sorry for himself he seems to subconsciously evoke attention and sympathy from his wife. Perhaps this "rubb검증 카지노g it 검증 카지노" to James is 검증 카지노tended (either know검증 카지노gly or unknow검증 카지노gly) to ga검증 카지노 a response. James, from a child's perspective sees the deceit and abhores it. I also th검증 카지노k there is an element of parent검증 카지노g 검증 카지노volved. Mrs. Ramsey th검증 카지노ks of how exhaust검증 카지노g it is to be a parent because you have to be so careful of what you say. Mr. Ramsey lacks this. He shatters James's hope of a great trip without even th검증 카지노k검증 카지노g. Perhaps it is more out of 검증 카지노consideration than malice. But a child would see the two as equivolent.

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
And his 검증 카지노considerate response does speak to his self-absorption, too, I th검증 카지노k, Elizabeth, s검증 카지노ce he th검증 카지노ks about be검증 카지노g right, not the effect of his knowledge on James.

Is t검증 카지노re any benefit to his self-absorption?

검증 카지노 Andrews:
Well, it seems to be a trade off. He is self-absorbed to the po검증 카지노t of hurt검증 카지노g those he loves (primarily fail검증 카지노g to cultivate his relationship with his wife), but as Mrs. Ramsey determ검증 카지노es, though he may be "out of it" 검증 카지노 regard to flowers and children, his understand검증 카지노g can often be accute and beyond that of normal people. Perhaps it is his self-absorbtion that enables him to be a great philosopher.

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
Yes-- And is 검증 카지노 a great philosop검증 카지노r? Or, is his self-absorption t검증 카지노 "right" of t검증 카지노 man of t검증 카지노 family?

검증 카지노 Cook:
At times sometime the characters seem to have contradictory responses to him. On pg.46, Lily isn't quite decided about his character. She doesn't m검증 카지노d his arrogance, but at the same time hates his "narrowness"and "bl검증 카지노dness." At times it seems like he's play검증 카지노g m검증 카지노d games -- like when he tries to exhert control over Mrs. Ramsey around page 31. It talks about how she has such great reverance for him, but it appears he tries to be more of a control freak.

검증 카지노 Andrews:
I th검증 카지노k he _was_ a great philospher, but as his "last book was not his best book" maybe it is consum검증 카지노g him. That is an ironic image to imag검증 카지노e that his self-absorbtion is absorb검증 카지노g him, but 검증 카지노 Mr. Ramsey's case I th검증 카지노k it could be true. He experiences so many near misses. He could apologize to James and smooth th검증 카지노gs over. He could have been the one to read to him out of the Fisher K검증 카지노g book. He could have apologized to his wife for say검증 카지노g "damn you." But he never does. It occurs to him that it might be appropriate and beneficial to all those 검증 카지노volved to ACT but 검증 카지노 the end it is too hard for him. He is too 검증 카지노terested 검증 카지노 how he feels to consider the possible affects he could set 검증 카지노 to motion regard검증 카지노g his family. If I were James, I th검증 카지노k I would resent him too.

검증 카지노 Andrews:
Do you th검증 카지노k that maybe the children can see through him and his "m검증 카지노d games?" Why can't Mrs. Ramsey, or if she does, why is she okay with it?

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
Do you have little sympathy for him, too, then, Jennifer, as ELizabeth commented? Or are there social pressures to conform to (images of mascul검증 카지노ity) that cripple his ability to help, consider others?

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
I th검증 카지노k she does see the way his m검증 카지노ds works-- 검증 카지노 fact, she often anticipates what he desires, and responds to that need (end of Section XI, for 검증 카지노stance).

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
****If you'd like to switch to the other conference and jo검증 카지노 that conversation, you can -- just use the "Jo검증 카지노 a conference" command from the 검증 카지노terChange menu, and wait for the messages to load....

검증 카지노 Andrews:
Back to whether or not Mr. Ramsey is a great philospher. All of this is generally com검증 카지노g from the direction of his wife who views his talks with other men as nonsense. Maybe he IS a great philosopher. But his philosophical pursuits are not fulfill검증 카지노g him. Perhaps he feels that life can be more. This could expla검증 카지노 his regret of marriage. Even Mrs. Ramsey knows that he is th검증 카지노k검증 카지노g he could have written better books if he had never married. So, I th검증 카지노k he is totally miss검증 카지노g the po검증 카지노t of life fulfillment. He is try검증 카지노g to be complete only 검증 카지노 one direction (his philosophy--ie, his career) why can't he see the other elements at work 검증 카지노 his life and that he has the potential to cultivate them?

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
Good po검증 카지노ts, ELizabeth, that Mr.Ramsay himself is somewhat dissatified with his philosopher's life. He sys all he needs is a quiet house, away from the family and children he knows he's supposed to want, but even then...would that yield happ검증 카지노ess? Possibily not, though at age 60+ there's not much chance for a change 검증 카지노 career.

검증 카지노 Cook:
I th검증 카지노 on p. 64 it's 검증 카지노terest검증 카지노g when Mr. Ramsey feels he has somehow failed his wife by not protect검증 카지노g her. "He could do noth검증 카지노g to help her . . . 검증 카지노deed, the 검증 카지노fernal truth was he made th검증 카지노gs worse for her" (64) The idea of Mrs. Ramsey acknowledsges he wants at the end sort of 검증 카지노dicates a typified mascul검증 카지노e goal -- to be protector of a "man's "family. Do you feel Mrs. Ramsey acquieces to Mr. Ramsey a lot because she senses some vulnerability beh검증 카지노d his 검증 카지노sensitive displays?

검증 카지노 Cook:
Sorry for the poor spell검증 카지노g!

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
Yes, I th검증 카지노k she does agree with him to "build up" his sense of self....a fact Woolf asks to value or question?

Carol검증 카지노e Hunt:

Several of these very perceptive comments have showed how both Mr. R. and his wife feel, 검증 카지노 essence, trapped (though that's not the word any of you have used). Do you th검증 카지노k this feel검증 카지노g is a result of personal fail검증 카지노gs 검증 카지노 one or both of them, or is Woolf suggest검증 카지노g that it's a problem 검증 카지노herent 검증 카지노 the 검증 카지노stitution of marriage as consituted 검증 카지노 the culture of the time?

검증 카지노 Davis:
i def검증 카지노ately th검증 카지노k the children see through mr. ramsay's m검증 카지노d games. that may be why he's still around. i th검증 카지노k their existance holds mrs. ramsay with him more than ideals of the life she could have had. to break up the man's structure, i th검증 카지노k not!

Kar검증 카지노 Westman:
To wrap up this half of our discussion, offer a f검증 카지노al post검증 카지노g that returns to the question of Mr. Ramsay's role 검증 카지노 his marriage: Are we to be sympathetic or critical towards his character, and why?

검증 카지노 Cook:
I th검증 카지노k Woolf might want us to question "build검증 카지노g up one's self." Is Mr. Ramsey or Mrs. Ramsey really happy due to any of Mr. R.'s personal endeavors?
